The Different Types of Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a common disorder that arises when the airway collapses during sleep. The CPAP machine provides a constant pressure to prevent the airway from falling. There are three main types of sleep apnoea:
1) Central sleep apnoea, caused by a defect in the signaling process that the brain sends to the muscles that help you breath. This commonly occurs in those with brain damage, e.g. strokes or tumours.
2) Obstructive sleep apnoea, the type that most people refer to, caused by narrowing of airflow to the lungs when the throat becomes blocked.
3) Mixed sleep apnoea, a mixture of the two above.
